Ways to Volunteer

There are so many opportunities and ways to make an impact by volunteering your time - there is bound to be that is just perfect fit for you!  Volunteer sessions typically last 2-3 hours, depending on the day, the chores needed, and your availability.  Thanks so much for your willingness to help us out!

Barn Chores   

  • Duties
    • Weekday Shifts:  9 am-Noon, 3 - 6 pm
    • Weekend Shifts:  more flexible, typically between 10 am - 5 pm
    • Check, and scrub, fill water buckets in stalls and turnouts as needed.
    • Sweeping, general cleaning, special projects as needed.
    • Pick up manure from stalls/turnouts.
  • Qualifications
    • Must be 18 yrs old to volunteer independently.  Under 18 requires parental approval and supervision while at the barn.
    • Must be available to volunteer the same day every week.
    • High degree of reliability.
    • Can involve lifting heavy weight and strenuous hard work, although there are tasks that do not require heavy lifting.
    • Experience working around horses is helpful, but not required.

 Horse Feeding

  • Duties
    • AM Shift: 8 -10 am; PM Shift: 4 - 6 pm.
    • Distribute correct quantities of hay and grain and medications for each horse as instructed.
    • Monitor all horses’ health and well-being.
    • Note any health or safety issues and report them immediately.
  • Qualifications
    • Must be available to volunteer the same day every week.
    • High degree of reliability.
    • Ability to accurately measure and mix feed, supplements, and medications as instructed.
    • Involves lifting heavy weight.
    • Experience working around horses is helpful, but not required.

 Fundraising

  • Duties
    • Work with Development Director to plan and implement effective fund-raising ideas and events.
    • Assist at any of our events throughout the year.
      • Horse Shows
      • Work Parties
      • Dinners, Auctions
      • Others
  • Qualifications
    • Minimum age:  19
    • Organized, attention to detail.
    • Enjoys people and events.

     Facilities Maintenance / Construction

    • Duties
      • Shift: Saturdays or Sundays between 10 am - 5 pm
      • Weekly maintenance/repair of stables.
      • Pasture & fence maintenance.
      • Lawn mowing and weed whacking.
      • Painting.
      • Occasional building projects.
    • Qualifications
      • Construction related knowledge/experience helpful but not required.
      • Ability to operate power tools helpful.

    Office / Clerical

    • Duties
      • Shift:  Saturdays, 9 am - Noon (or as agreed upon)
      • Computer work data entry, filing/organizing paperwork.
      • Writing letters, stuffing envelopes, sealing, etc.
      • Phone calls (for example: reference checking of prospective adopters, supporting fundraising efforts, helping coordinate events, etc.).
      • Photo copying various papers as needed.
      • Assisting Executive Director and Barn Manager as needed.
    • Qualifications
      • Minimum Age:  16
      • Ability to complete tasks efficiently.
      • Pleasant phone manner.
      • Office / clerical experience helpful but not required.

     Site Checker

    • Duties
      • Shift: as needed/scheduled
      • Travel to the location prospective adopter intends to keep horse.
      • Inspect the pasture, fencing, and shelter.
      • Take photographs to document conditions.
      • Report findings to Adoption Coordinator in a timely manner.
    • Qualifications
      • Minimum Age:  21
      • Access to reliable transportation and own insurance.
      • Access to reasonable quality camera.
      • Some knowledge/experience with general horse-keeping best practices required.
      • Ability to complete assignment in a timely manner.

    Hauling Horses

    • Duties
      • Transport horses as needed to/from the barn, especially for vet and farrier visits
    • Qualifications
      • Minimum age:  25
      • Licensed driver with experience hauling horses.
      • Access to truck and horse trailer in good condition.
      • Must have own insurance.

    Night Checker

    • Duties
      • Shift:  9 - 10pm
      • Walk through barn and observe each horse, looking for any issues.
      • Ensure all horses have water and are safely in their stalls.
      • If horse is injured or in distress, report immediately, calling emergency Vet when appropriate.
    • Qualifications
      • Minimum Age:  21
      • High degree of reliability.
      • Requires knowledge of horse anatomy/behavior/illness.
      • Ability to recognize symptoms of distress.
